PAPHOS
Paphos’ historical wealth has earned it a place among UNESCO’s World
Heritage sites, while Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love and beauty, adds a
legendary dimension to recorded history. Surrounding the flourishing seaside
resort of Paphos town are a number of neighbouring villages and communities,
where local colour is laced with international streaks, as expatriates adopt
this region and call it their own.
Development is kept in check with stringent controls that rule out
high-rise buildings and protect the environment. Unspoilt landscapes extend
from the coast up the gentle hills and into the Akamas Nature Reserve that
stretches between the district’s two towns of Paphos and Polis.
Such is the appeal of the Paphos district that many a visitor falls
hopelessly in love with it. One holiday here leads to another, often
culminating in periodical long-term visits, and even permanent resettlement.
The result is unusual, and quite enticing: relaxed country living, with
cosmopolitan overtones. |
